Obviously I’m not Oprah Winfrey, but I couldn’t help following her lead. Down below are 5 of my favorite things to decorate a room/home with! These items I love bringing into a room to make it more vibrant, cozy, and unique. This is a prompt I will write on consistently on both the ‘For The Home’ and the ‘Beauty + Fashion’ pages, so check the site regularly to see what other items I have added to my list!
- Christmas Lights
You might be saying, “Uhh..what? It’s not Christmas anymore” but to me, Christmas lights are more than just seasonal décor. In fact, in my home they are used all year round! I especially love hanging them in different places on the walls in my bedroom to give the room more of a soft glow. Sometimes the ceiling lights can be harshly bright and don’t always provide the best lighting, but after hanging up some Christmas lights the room feels warm and cozy.
(I feel like the pictures are pretty self explanatory. These lights make the canopy above my bed so dreamy! Dollar General. $2.50. Zero regrets)
- Anything Gold
Gold is very much in style right now, especially in home décor and I am not ashamed to say that I have fallen in love with this trend. To me, gold is the best oxymoron; it is bright and new, but it also gives off that vibe of timeless vintage. Adorning a room with gold pieces is a great way to provide a pop of color and is also an excellent method to use to make an area of your home feel complete.
(White comforter with gold polka dots. The comforter set from Target includes: 1 comforter, 2 shams (not pictured), and one throw pillow. Around $50)
(Gold ceramic lamp from Target, about $24.99)
3. Reusing and Reviving Old Furniture
I’m the youngest child in my family, so the topic of hand-me-downs is not foreign to me. T-shirts, jeans, hoodies, and skirts have all been passed down to me as well as furniture! I always remind myself that I never want to decorate a space and have it look as if it isn’t used or lived in; I want the schemes I create to be homey and bringing in older furniture pieces makes that easy. So whether you’re living on your own for the first time and feeling a little homesick, or just looking for a way to make your home more comfortable for you and your loved ones, digging in that storage space to find more of a personal piece to incorporate in your design could be just what you need.
(Wicker lounge chair from my mother. I use it as a desk chair and like to drape blankets over it to make it warm and comfortable)
(Antique end table also from my mom! I painted it a matte burgundy color and replaced the knob on the door. Now I use the inside to store picture frames and the top for things that I can quickly grab as I’m walking out the door!)
4. Decorative Storage Boxes
Let’s face it: we have a lot of stuff. Cute journals that we picked up from Target even though we literally have ten blank and unused ones at home, those stuffed animals from second grade that we refuse to get rid of because they were a part of our childhood, etc. So I’m all for cute and creative ways to store my plethora of things; especially when I’m out of closet or cabinet space, and these boxes do the trick. They are functional and chic so you don’t have to try to hide them away!
(I can’t get enough of these that I bought from Michael’s, somewhere between $6-12 for each box)
5. Furniture Doubling as Storage Space
Whenever I think about adding a piece of furniture to a room, I try to look for pieces that serve more than one function that way it saves space. It can be really easy to clutter an area in your home with furniture, but if you try looking for more functional and multipurpose pieces, then it’ll be easier to declutter!
(This full length mirror doubles as a jewelry holder. It holds some of my necklaces, bracelets, and even rings! Kirkland’s, somewhere between $130-150)
(This bench can also fall under the ‘Old Furniture’ category as well! I’m pretty sure it used to be my great grandmother’s and now it stands at the end of my bed. The top opens and the inside is perfect for storing photographs, picture frames, journals, and other items!)
These are my 5 favorite things in home decor! I hope you enjoyed reading and that you were able to take away some ideas for your home!
Sincerely,
Cam
These are great ideas. I also like the idea of a double purpose furniture. And white Christmas lights are beautiful
